Sleep disturbances affect 30% of adults globally. There is a wide variety of causes, those suffering from chronic pain, anxiety, or high levels of stress will often have difficulty falling asleep as a result of the problems.

There are also conditions such as sleep apnea and insomnia that will have a more direct effect on an individuals ability to sleep. Many sleep aids come with adverse side effects that can negatively effect people throughout the daytime. It’s unsurprising then that many people are now turning to CBD for a less aggressive and more natural sleep aid.

Because everybody’s biological system is unique, there is no universal response to taking CBD as a sleep aid. It may be the case that an individuals ability suffering from nervous system or anxiety related insomnia may respond much better to CBD usage than an individual who is suffering from sleep apnea, for example. Therefore, whilst it cannot be claimed that CBD will fix everybody’s sleep disturbances, we can make the claim that it has helped many individuals overcome problems with their sleep disturbance.

There are three main reasons why CBD can help people with sleep disturbance problems:

  • Anxiolytic effects: A reduction in anxiety can help with sleep initiation
  • Cortisol Reduction: Cortisol is often referred to as ‘the stress hormone’, decreasing the amount of cortisol in the system can decrease the interference this I hormone can have on sleep.
  • Modulation of serotonin: CBD interacts with the 5HT1A receptors which can positively alter peoples emotional states. This emotional regulation can put people in a better state for a good nights sleep.

There are countless anecdotal reports of CBD oil completely revolutionising an individuals ability to get in a good nights sleep. There are many ways in which taking CBD can have a positive effect on people sleep cycles, but it is important to bear in mind that it may not be effective for everyone.

Not many clinical studies have been done with a focus on how CBD affects sleep, however the preliminary studies that have been done in this area show very promising results.

A study Published by Dr Scott Shannon showed the positive use of CBD to treat anxiety related sleep issues.

"72 adults presenting with primary concerns of anxiety (n = 47) or poor sleep (n = 25). Anxiety scores decreased within the first month in 57 patients (79.2%) and remained decreased during the study duration. Sleep scores improved within the first month in 48 patients (66.7%)"

Better sleep might start with a few drops.
