A Quick Guide to Dosing CBD - Start Low and Go Slow

If you’re new to using CBD you may feel a sense of uncertainty when it comes to how much to take. Firstly there’s the choice of how strong you want your oil to be, then you have to consider how many drops to take per dose.

The optimal CBD dosage varies from person to person. This is because people use CBD for different reasons; some people are only seeking light relief from its anti-anxiety properties, others may use it for a sleep aid, while many use it to help treat more serious chronic conditions. Your past experience with cannabis may also play a part in finding the correct dose for you. If you have only minimal, or no experience using CBD or cannabis recreationally, you will likely find that you will only require a small amount of CBD to see meaningful results.

Some people may find they experience mild drowsiness if they take above their required amount of CBD, for those people it would be worth considering micro-dosing CBD throughout the day. Rather than taking a large dose in the morning to stabilise your day, or taking a large dose before bed for improved sleep, micro-dosing is the practice of taking a very small amount consistently throughout the day.

A day of microdosing may look something like this; 1 drop of 5%CBD at 9am, another at 12pm, another at 4pm and another at 8pm.

This would mitigate the risk of taking too much and experiencing any side effects that may arise when people go over their optimal dose.

This dosage example would equate to 10mg of CBD taken into the system throughout the day.

But how does this calculation work?

Quite simply, 1 drop of a 10% oil equates to 5mg of CBD, therefore 2 drops of a 10% oil equates to 10mg, 4 drops of a 5% oil also equates to 10mg. This logic applies to all oils, for example 1 drop of 50% oil would equate to 25mg of CBD.

Using this method, it becomes easy to administer a consistent dose and keep track of how much CBD in milligrams you are consuming.

CBD Drop Equivalents (Examples)

Oil Strength Example Dose CBD in mg
5% oil 4 drops 10 mg
10% oil 2 drops 10 mg
50% oil 1 drop 25 mg

So how do you know how much CBD is the correct dose for you?

Seeing as the correct amount varies from person to person, it will most likely require a little bit of exploration to find your ideal dose.

The motto to keep in mind is ‘start low and go slow’.

The effect of CBD compounds over time with consistent use, so you may not feel the difference within the first few days. You might start with a small dose of 5mg a day and increase to 10mg the next week. After you increase the dose, observe how you feel. Do this until you find the sweet spot where you are taking enough to feel the full positive effects. Once you increase the dose above this optimal threshold, you should notice that taking more doesn’t add to the positive effects you are already feeling, if this occurs you should reduce how much you are taking back down to the sweet spot.

Answering the question ‘how much CBD is correct for me?’ may take a little time and experimentation, just remember to track how much you are taking so you can effectively increase or decrease the dose by small increments each time.
