What is Shilajit?
Shilajit is a thick resin formed in the heat compress of rocks in the Himalayas, Altai, Caucasus and Gilgit- Baltistan mountains ranges. Shilajit forms over centuries of gradual decomposition of plant matter and microbial activity. It is a potent dietary supplement that can restore energetic balance.
Key Components
Shilajit contains beneficial minerals including; calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, chromium and lead. It also contains high levels of fulvic acid and humic acid. Fulvic acid enhances nutrient absorption, boosts cellular energy, acts as an antioxidant and improves gut health. Humic acid promotes digestive health, boosts immune function and reduces inflammation. Humic acid can bind to heavy metals and pollutants to help remove them from the body. It is also considered a prebiotic and can support gut health by promoting beneficial bacteria, which in turn can positively affect the immune system. Due to its diverse range of benefits, shilajit is a health supplement that can give an energetic boost to many people for different reasons.
Clinical Evidence & Research
Although scientific research is limited due to the novelty of Shilajit in western medicine, there have been some promising clinical trials and research conducted that have revealed the potential benefits of taking Shilajit.
Testosterone & Men’s Health
One of these is the proven improvement to testosterone levels in men. ‘Of male volunteers ages 45-55, half of the participants were given a placebo, and half were given a 250 milligram (mg) dose of purified shilajit twice a day. After 90 consecutive days, the study found that participants receiving purified shilajit had a significantly higher testosterone level compared to the placebo group.’
Iron & Blood Health
Another benefit is that it can increase iron levels in the body. Iron deficiency anemia can result from a low- iron diet, blood loss, or an inability to absorb iron. Results from a recent lab test showed that Shilajit may gradually increase iron levels. This study using rats as subjects, found that the test group that received shilajit had an increase of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cells compared to rats from the control group. These are all vital components for blood & help maintain a healthy amount of iron in the system.
Energy, Strength & Exercise Performance
Recent research has shown that Shilajit can increase energy levels and can promote the retention of muscular strength. Shilajit can increase adenosine triphosphate availability, free testosterone, total testosterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone. This helps to facilitate increases in lean mass and muscular strength. This observation suggests Shilajit supplementation may have a beneficial effect on exercise performance, the strengths gains made during exercise, and can enhance fatigue-related metabolic characteristics.
Brain Health & Alzheimer’s Research
Some researchers have observed that taking Shilajit may combat the onset of Alzheimer’s. This is due to the fact that there are high levels of fulvic acid in Shilajit, a powerful antioxidant. Fulvic acid can prevent the build up of tau protein from clumping together into the neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. Although tau protein is an important part of the nervous system, a buildup of this protein can trigger brain cell damage.
How to Take Shilajit
Shilajit is a supplement best taken in the mornings due to its energising effects. You can dissolve the resin into warm (not boiling) water, milk, or even to herbal tea. It’s good to start with lower doses to test your general tolerance and chase it with a glass of water as it mildly detoxifies the body.
Safety & Medical Advice
We recommend you talk with your medical consultant before taking Shilajit into your medical routine, especially if you are currently taking other medications, or dealing with any ongoing health conditions.
