Medicinal Mushrooms and Their Benefits for Mind and Body

Medicinal Mushrooms and Their Benefits for Mind and Body

Between 10,000 & 20,000 species of mushrooms have been named and described by modern scientists. Approximately 3,000 are edible, many more than that are poisonous, roughly 700 species have been recorded to have medicinal properties, and a little over 100 have psychedelic properties.

The Role of Fungi in Nature

Mushrooms are the reproductive element of fungi structures, much the same way fruit is the reproductive element in plants. Fungi serve a vital role in the ecosystem by decomposing organic matter, and serve as a source of food for living organisms across the globe. Through the study of fossil records we know that mushrooms significantly predate land plants, with evidence suggesting the first mushroom species began to populate the Earth between 800 million to 1 billion years ago. Plants began to populate the Earth around 700 million years ago. Many geoscientists theorise that it was the mushrooms’ influence on the atmosphere that made the suitable conditions for plants and organic life to form.

Ancient Uses & Medicinal History

Many varieties of mushrooms have been a part of the human diet for as long as we have walked the Earth. They have been recorded for their medicinal properties for thousands of years. Agaricus campestris was recorded in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of fatigue, it is a source of protein and vitamins B, C, D & K. In ancient Chinese medicine, Reishi Tremella was used to promote longevity, vitality and beauty. In Japan, Lions Mane was embraced by Buddhist monks for enhancing focus & spiritual clarity. In Siberia and Northern Europe, Chaga was brewed into teas to help survive winter by boosting immunity. In Tibet & Nepal, Cordyceps were commonly consumed to increase stamina and energy at high altitudes.

Bristol Fungarium Products

Chaga

Chaga is found throughout the northern hemisphere, in Europe, Siberia, & North America. Chaga grows from mature birch trees, a process that takes upwards of 15 years. Hailed as one of the most nutrient-rich food sources, it contains high levels of melanin and powerful antioxidants. It is also highly alkaline due to its mineral content, including calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc. Traditionally used in Russia as a folk medicine to treat infections and GI disorders, Chaga is thought to help prevent degenerative disorders, boost stamina, and support longevity.

Cordyceps

Used in ancient Himalayan traditions, Cordyceps was observed to increase energy and vitality. Studies have shown that Cordyceps can increase sperm count, improve libido in both men and women, and enhance endurance. It supports energy levels and vitality, making it popular for those seeking natural stamina and hormonal balance.

Lions Mane

Used in Chinese medicine since the Tang Dynasty, Lion’s Mane supports the liver, heart, and nervous system. Modern studies show it stimulates neurogenesis and acts as a neuroprotective agent, which may help with focus, memory, and ADHD symptoms. Its antioxidant properties also support digestive health and immunity.

Reishi

Known as the “Mushroom of Immortality,” Reishi has been used for over 2,000 years to reduce stress, improve sleep, and support the immune system. It has anti-inflammatory and protective effects on the kidneys and liver and is valued for its ability to calm the mind and promote balance.

Turkey Tail

First recorded in 200BC China, Turkey Tail supports the immune system through compounds called PSK and PSP, which help activate natural killer cells and stimulate immune response. These compounds are even used to complement modern medical treatments like chemotherapy, helping the body recover and defend itself more effectively.
