CBD for Treating PTSD
PTSD is a serious condition that affects millions of people in the UK. Emerging research suggests that CBD may offer a gentle, complementary route to managing its symptoms — from disrupted sleep to nervous system dysregulation. Here's what the evidence currently shows.
PTSD in the UK
PTSD develops as a psychological response to experiencing a traumatic event. Approximately 35% of adults in the UK have experienced at least one such event, and roughly 15–25% of those individuals will go on to develop PTSD. In a recent national survey, 5.7% of the adult population screened positive for PTSD — up from 4.4% in 2014.
The effects of PTSD can include:
How Does PTSD Affect the Body and Nervous System?
These symptoms can seriously affect an individual's quality of life and exacerbate pre-existing health conditions. Inflammation and hormone regulation — including cortisol levels — depend on the body's ability to relax and experience deep rest. The sleep disruption and constant state of high alert caused by PTSD interrupt this process, making it difficult for the body to enter the regenerative states it needs to heal.
The constant fight-or-flight state caused by PTSD leads to ongoing adrenaline and cortisol surges, a hyperactive amygdala, hyper-vigilance, and a reduced ability to return to calm after a stressful event. This results in nervous system dysregulation, with the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, neurochemistry, and hormones all affected.
Areas of the Brain and Body Affected by PTSD
| Area | Effect |
|---|---|
| Amygdala | Becomes hyperactive, triggering excessive fear and panic responses |
| Prefrontal cortex | Reduced ability to regulate emotional responses |
| Hippocampus | Memory processing disrupted, contributing to flashbacks |
| Hormones | Elevated cortisol and adrenaline from sustained fight-or-flight state |
| Nervous system | Remains in a state of dysregulation, reducing resilience and recovery |
Many practices can help regulate the nervous system — including a nutritious diet, gentle exercise, good sleep, and CBD.
How Does CBD Affect PTSD?
While many PTSD sufferers have self-medicated using THC, researchers believe CBD may offer a way to address symptoms without the risk of triggering or worsening psychosis.
Study — 2019
An initial study with 11 patients found that 10 out of 11 experienced an improvement in their PTSD symptoms after an 8-week CBD treatment programme. While a larger double-blind trial would be more conclusive, this is promising early data in support of CBD's potential role in symptom relief.
CBD appears to help through modulation of the endocannabinoid system, which in turn regulates the nervous system and natural sleep cycles.
Sleep
CBD can help reduce hyperactivity in the amygdala — the area of the brain responsible for the fight-or-flight response, which is often overactive in PTSD sufferers. Beyond this, cannabinoids (specifically CBN) have been shown to significantly improve sleep quality.
"20mg of CBN taken nightly may be helpful for improving overall sleep disturbance, including the number of times one wakes up throughout the night, without impacting daytime fatigue." — Double-blind study, October 2023
Improved sleep allows the body to better process trauma by reducing cortisol levels that can spike during flashbacks. Generally, with better sleep, flashbacks occur less frequently and with less intensity — allowing patients to gradually regulate the neurochemical responses that sustain PTSD symptoms.
The Nervous System
CBD regulates the nervous system through its modulation of the endocannabinoid system. This is, in fact, where CBD first gained widespread credibility — through strong anecdotal evidence from those with motor neurone diseases, later supported by clinical studies demonstrating its effectiveness for nervous system regulation.
Future Studies
University of Nebraska Medical Center
An 8-week double-blind trial using Fitbits and brain imaging technology is currently underway to track sleep and neural activity and observe how CBD influences trauma-shaped nervous systems.
University of Texas
A pilot trial is testing whether CBD can be used effectively alongside exposure therapy, with the hypothesis that it will reduce baseline anxiety — helping patients stay engaged in difficult trauma therapy work for longer.
Additional Methods for Treating PTSD
PTSD is a complex condition that often requires a combination of approaches to manage effectively. Mindful practices such as meditation and Qi Gong, gentle exercise, and a nutritious diet all play an important role in recovery.
CBD is a mild, complementary option — and while the early evidence is encouraging, we always recommend speaking with a medical professional before incorporating it into your routine, particularly if you are taking pharmaceutical medication.
